    Charles Edmund Swanson had a unique reason for feeling ambivalent about Pearl Harbor Day, December 7, A veteran of the Marine Corps, he felt obliged to fight in the war.

    Yet, on that same day, Swanson, who had also been a reporter, was accepted into the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop. 

    The Workshop had to wait almost four years for him. When it finally did get him, Swanson, who worked with combat information crews on carriers and destroyers during World War II and was still a commander in the U.S.

    Navy when he retired, wrote a war novel. In , at 35 years old, he submitted "The Golden Chain" for his master's thesis in English. 

    Two years later, in a strange twist of fate, Charles Swanson earned one of the first two doctorates in mass communication granted at the University of Iowa.
