    Eric Jerome Dickey, best-selling author from Memphis, has died

    Eric Jerome Dickey, the writer from Memphis whose erotic thrillers, fraught love stories and sagas of domestic crisis and international intrigue made him a popular chronicler of a particularly action-packed rendition of contemporary Black life, has died.

    Dickey, 59, died Sunday "after a long illness" in Los Angeles, where he lived, according to Becky Odell, the author's publicist at Dutton, an imprint of Penguin Random House.

    Dutton was Dickey's publishing home throughout the author's career, from his 1996 debut "Sister, Sister" to such later works as 2018's "Bad Men and Wicked Women," advertised with a tagline that could be applied to a number of Dickey novels: "Affairs of the heart can be lethal!"

    "His work has become a cultural touchstone over the course of his multi-decade writing career, earning him millions of dedicated readers around the world," said Odell, in a statement.
