He was born on March 2, 1818, in Terni, Italy. Briccialdi received his first flute lessons from his father, but he continued to learn and develop his skills on his own. After his father's early death, against his family's wishes for him to become a priest, Briccialdi ran away from home with only a few coins in his pocket, making a 40-mile journey on foot to Rome.
